Carpet care through a Canberra year

Canberra's climate is hard on carpet in its own way: freezing, dry winters with the heating on, dusty and sometimes smoky summers, autumn leaf litter and a heavy spring pollen season. Vacuum high-traffic areas often, deal with spills straight away, and have carpets professionally cleaned every 3–6 months if you have kids, pets or allergies.

Winter (June to August)

Frosty mornings, wet boots and houses sealed up against the cold. Ducted heating and wood heaters move a lot of dust around, and fine ash from a wood heater ends up in carpets and lounges. Put a good mat at every door and keep a shoe spot by the entry. If you clean in winter, choose a low-moisture method so carpet isn't sitting damp in a cold room.

Spring (September to November)

Canberra's grass pollen season is famous among hay fever sufferers. Pollen settles in carpet, rugs and fabric lounges, so a clean in spring makes sense if anyone at home sneezes their way through October. It's also when pet urine smells tend to come back, as the weather warms.

Summer (December to February)

Hot, dry days, open windows and dust. In some years there's bushfire smoke too, which leaves a smell in soft furnishings. Vacuum more often, and consider a clean once the smoke clears. Summer is also peak moving season, with lots of leases ending.

Autumn (March to May)

Canberra's famous autumn colour comes with a lot of leaf litter, and wet leaves stain. Keep paths swept and mats clean. Autumn is a good time to clean carpets before winter shuts the house up.

Spills: what to do straight away

Blot with a clean white cloth; don't rub. Skip heavy soaps, which leave residue that attracts dirt. For anything that won't shift, see our stain removal service.

Common questions

What's the best time of year to clean carpets in Canberra?

Any time works, because a Chem-Dry clean typically dries in 1–4 hours. Many people book in spring, after a winter of closed-up houses and heaters, or before summer visitors and Christmas.

Does carpet dry slower in a Canberra winter?

Cold, still air slows drying, but Canberra's air is usually dry. Turn the heating on and give the room some airflow, and a low-moisture clean will still dry quickly.

How do I stop red dirt staining my carpet?

Let muddy soil dry, then vacuum it up before treating anything that's left. Rubbing wet mud spreads it. A doormat at each entry helps a lot.
